While reciting Mantras(Japa),at the same time,one should visualize the god/goddess of that Mantra in his mind.He should visualize starting from the face of the god/goddess.then neck and shoulders,trunk,legs and finally feet.Thus the entire picture of god/goddess should be imprinted in the mind and stored in sub-conscious also.This form will guide him after his death to the higher worlds.
